We are all fortunate to live in California, a state that is arguably "the best place on earth." With its stunning vistas, dynamic economy, and cosmopolitan attitude, few states rival California. Unfortunately there is one huge drawback: the excessively liberal nature of our politics. The epicenter of this problem: The University of California, Berkeley. For decades, Berkeley has been known as "that crazy socialist commune in the Bay Area." As the number one public university in the country, and as one of California's premier intellectual establishments, Berkeley's left wing fanaticism exerts a far reaching influence on our state's social and political character. In January 2000, a group of UC students formed the Berkeley Conservative Foundation to offer a voice to the silent majority of Cal students whose views are mocked and disparaged by the entrenched liberal establishment. Gone are the days where these daily attacks on our core American ideals, morals, and values are left unchecked. Gone are the days when conservatives are forced to exist in silence. Gone are the days when the police are demonized while criminals are celebrated, and the best way to promote your views is by chaining yourself to classrooms, disrupting education, and going on hunger strikes. We at the Berkeley Conservative Foundation love our country and our University. For these reasons, we refuse to sit idly by while rogue intellectuals continue their witch-hunt against capitalism and the American dream. This is a formidable challenge, but we are up to the task. The sky's the limit, but the only obstacle blocking us from making the Bay Area a kinder, gentle place for conservatives is our lack of financial resources. With your help, we can fully fund the three main areas of our mission. Our publication, the California Patriot, is a monthly dose of conservative thought and reason that Berkeley desperately needs. Besides filling the conservative void on campus, it also provides educational and leadership opportunities for many students. In July 2000, the California Patriot was recognized by the Leadership Institute, (a national conservative organization dedicated to advancing conservatism on college campuses) as the "Best New Student Publication" in the country. Our speakers' division works hard to bring widely respected conservative speakers to campus to debate issues that regularly involve Berkeley students. This is an essential component of our ultimate goal of spreading our conservative philosophy. In September 2000, we brought author and prominent conservative Dan Flynn to campus to discuss the case of celebrated cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal. The event was highly controversial, with over 200 protestors refusing to allow Flynn, the executive director of Accuracy in Academia, the right to speak. The event ended with these angry liberals torching books and magazines in a scene reminiscent of Nazi Germany. We have also begun a community service program that puts good works behind the catch phrase "compassionate conservatism." Through local environment clean-ups, tutoring less fortunate children, and other programs, we try to solve social ills through individual initiative, not government intervention. At Berkeley, our work is cut out for us. But we are up for the job. The time to liberate Berkeley from its suffocating liberalism is now! The seeds have been sown, but we need your tax deductible contributions to fertilize what could be Berkeley's largest harvest of rational thought and common sense ever. If you are inspired by our message, and as dedicated to destroying the liberal's choke hold on our campuses as we are, please send a contribution to the Berkeley Conservative Foundation today. We are a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All of
our contributions are completely tax deductible. Your contributions will
help us to continue our fight to make Berkeley a safe place for conservatism.
